Opportunities……

August 21, 2014

I have been invited by the CQA/ACC to enter a quilt in their first ever traveling quilt show. What an honour! The show will consist of 40 quilts (12″ x 16″) and will be traveling to venues around Canada for the next few months, including Quilt Canada in Lethbridge, AB next year. At the end, the quilts will be sold with the proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. The theme is: It’s Time for Colour

I love using colour in my quilts so this theme is perfect for me. I began by thinking of the most colourful quilts I have done and wondering if they would work as a small quilt. Closeups of flowers came to mind, of course…..like the Bird of Paradise bloom that I did in very large form….’Fiesta’….there are really so many vivid blooms that could be done. Other thoughts began to cross my mind of other bright objects. Then, as I was driving around this beautiful island of PEI, I noticed the Canola fields coming into bloom and the red dirt roads, purple blooms on potato plants, amazing blooms in the ditches, etc and I realized that I lived surrounded by colour!

My quilt came into focus. I would showcase this island province in my quilt. I started with a small sketch and, as usual for me, started cutting. I don’t use a lot of patterns when I create a landscape …I just start laying fabrics down. I look at the quilt in passing for a while and tweak things here and there, sometimes scrapping them altogether. It is a slow process and I love seeing it solidify in front of me.

I now have a good start on my quilt (which has to be completed and in Victoria, BC by the end of Sept)

Here it is now…..comments? thoughts? bring them on……:)

PEI-a World of Colour

The blue in the background is the ocean and will have Confederation bridge showing. The angle of the road needs work yet and the flowers in the foreground are still to be added.
